Tems’ Grammys win undermines Afrobeat talents – Destiny Omon
Multiple award-winning Film Maker and Producer Destiny Austine Omon has descended heavily on organisers of the Grammys over the award of Best African Music Performance to Tems.

During a recent appearance on Onua Showbiz with Nana Kwame Gyan, Destiny Austine Omon expressed strong opinions about Tems, also known as Temilade Openiyi, and her recent Grammy Award win, igniting a heated discussion within the Afrobeat community.
Omon claimed that awarding Tems the Grammy was a deliberate attempt to undermine the genre, stating, “Giving her that award is obviously not fair.”
Omon didn’t hold back as he compared Tems to other Nigerian artistes who he believes are more deserving of the accolade.
He pointed to Ahmed Ololade, known as Asake, highlighting his consistent success in the music scene.
“Asake is doing so well with his music because he’s giving the songs to us back to back,” he said.
“Even a DJ can only be playing Asake’s songs and you will dance like never before.”
The conversation took a deeper turn as Omon mentioned other notable figures in the Afrobeat scene, including Rema, Burna Boy, and Davido, whom he referred to as the “torch light of Afrobeat” and “Afrobeat poster boys”.
He lamented the lack of discussion surrounding the Grammy, remarking, “No one is no longer talking about the Grammy… if it was Davido that received that Grammy award, it would have been all over the world.”
