This is rather reminiscent of a military takeover’ – Bawumia to Mahama on post-election developments
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, has condemned some series of developments that have occurred in the country post the December 07, 2024 elections.
He says some of the happenings erode the essence of democratic governance since they disregard the tenets of democracy which Ghana has chosen as its system of government.
From recent attacks on journalists to the invasion of homes of previous government appointees to some isolated post-election violence in certain parts of the country, Dr. Bawumia believes the country is being ushered into an atmosphere of insecurity.
The former Vice President, who posted as part of an additional concern raised on the recent directive by the government to revoke post December 07, 2024 appointments on the government payroll, likened the development to a military takeover.
According to him, all the happenings defy the logic behind democracy and wants the President to get them addressed to depict a regime of a peaceful democratic transition as observed across the globe, rather than one which is being championed with democratic ideals.
The 2024 flag bearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) settled that the developments are rather “worrying times for our democracy.”
“Furthermore, there is a general atmosphere of insecurity with attacks on journalists, the use of our military to raid the homes of former government officials and communities, as well as mobs attacking innocent individuals and state institutions.
“This is rather reminiscent of a military takeover and not a peaceful democratic transition. These are certainly worrying times for our democracy, and the earlier action is taken to protect institutions and democratic practice, the better it would be for Ghana’s forward match,” he stated.
